Christmas Eve 2014. It is raining hard when I pull into the Saving Grace parking lot. I was about half an hour early and they weren’t quite ready, so I slogged back to the car. At least it wasn’t a cold rain, it was close to 60 degrees. I had noticed Madeline among the dogs wandering around and was delighted to learn she would be our foster dog for the holiday weekend. She was great on the 20 minute ride home and she and Louie met with nary a bark or fanfare aside from some serious butt sniffing on Louie’s part.
Madeline is a very interesting looking girl. Saving Grace lists her as part Basset Hound and German Shepherd. She has the sweetest face (and disposition), a long, sturdy body and the shortest legs I’ve ever seen on a dog her size. Those legs might be short, but she’s fast. After the rain cleared out, she and Louie raced around the yard and those little legs kept up with Louie’s much longer legs.
Madeline was an excellent house guest. She seemed to feel right at home as soon as she arrived and followed me everywhere. And I do mean everywhere. I wiped the water off the shower door and there she was, sitting forlornly on the mat between the shower and toilet waiting for me to finish. It was then I decided, Hopelessly Devoted to You from Grease would be her “theme song.” Louie took about two weeks before he ventured back to any of the bedrooms when he first came here. She’s still quite playful and wants you to throw the ball. She enjoys going on walks and by Saturday night she was jumping on the couch to snuggle with me. She and Louie wrestled and ran together quite amiably. And zero accidents in the house!
If I thought I could afford two dogs, I’d take Ms. Madeline in a split second. She’s a wonderful, sweet companion and she will make you laugh on a daily basis. I was a little heartsick to look and see she was still available. I hope now that the hustle and bustle of the holidays have passed, someone will realize what a little gem Madeline is and take her home. Louie and I wish everyone a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year!

I think sweet Madeline probably had one of her best holidays ever with you and Louie, and my Christmas wish for her is that the new year will find her in a loving forever home. Best wishes to you and Louie for much happiness in the New Year.
It was wonderful having her around. I’m going to have to update the post, I forgot one of the best things about her. She stands on her hind legs and will twirl a little if she thinks she’s getting a treat. I did get a picture of her doing that. Miss Harper Lee, I hope you and your humans have a splendiferous 2015!
