I love to watch dogs sleep. Both Dudley and Zoe yipped in their sleep, but you could always tell when Dudley was dreaming because he twitched a great deal. Zoe rarely twitched or “chased rabbits” while she snoozed. I watched Lillie sleep and never noticed her twitching or making any sounds.
The first night Lillie visited she slept in her crate in my bedroom. I left for work the next morning and by the time I came home for lunch, she had discovered the ottoman by the window in the living room made a dandy bed for doggies. It was the one piece of furniture I always let Dudley and Zoe get on; although, Zoe decided that permission to get on the ottoman extended to the chair that she eventually chewed to pieces (that’s another story).
After that first night, Lillie would jump onto bed with me and position herself horizontally with her butt firmly planted in my chest. Then, just like Dudley, she would look over her right shoulder as if to say (rather sarcastically, I might add), “Yep, I put it there on purpose.” When Dudley did that, I would always laugh and the sound would prompt Dudley to whack my face with his tail which only made me laugh harder and give his butt a good scratching that he loved. But just as Dudley would get off the bed a short while later and stretch out on the floor, Lillie also would jump down and go into the living room for the rest of the night.
Dudley would stay in the room with me all night, he never was far away from whatever room I was in at anytime, but Zoe is the only dog who would stay on the bed all night. I don’t think it was because she wanted to be close to me, more that it was only fitting that the Z-Queen sleep on the queen sized bed. She always headed into the bedroom on her own and climbed on the bed whenever she wanted to nap, no matter whose house she was in.
Lillie also used the ottoman as a perch to look out the window. Many people in our neighborhood have dogs and walk on our street and Lillie enjoyed greeting them as they passed. It was nice to pull into the driveway and hear a barked greeting and see a dog face in the window. I am guessing I will find another dog to rescue by the end of the year, or more accurately, finding another dog to rescue me.
Whoever said “let sleeping dogs lie” didn’t sleep with dogs. – Unknown
Sooooo true on them rescuing you. My Zennie sure rescued this sad mess…. Love the stories and the perfect pictures!
You are not a sad mess, you are beautifully chaotic!
Isn’t it funny how Lillie just instinctively knew it would be ok to get on the ottoman that Dudley and Zoe were allowed on? It’s like their little souls spoke to her. My mommy says that she loves to watch me sleep because it’s so relaxing. With all the sleeping I do, you’d think my mommy would be a little more laid back!
Since Lillie has been back home, she hasn’t tried to get up on any furniture, so you must be right, Miss Harper Lee, that her instincts kicked it. Love all of the photos, Mandi! Lillie loves to scope out our street, too.
She wouldn’t get on the couch unless I invited her and she was the same about the bed except the time when I was trying to put clean sheets on it and she sprung up there. I believe that was just dog sarcasm, Zoe used to do that about every week when I changed sheets. but I’m sure the ottoman has some doggone good doggie smells on it, sort of like “leaving the light on for them.” I wish I were a better photographer!
My dog Holly has the best doggy dreams after agility training. She woofs and twitches her legs as if she is running then jumping.
Holly is a beauty! Zoe would have loved agility training and been great at it.
