“Monday morning you sure look fine” — that old Fleetwood Mac tune came quickly to mind when I opened my eyes Monday to find Dudley climbing up on the bed. He hadn’t done that since he blew out his knee in April, so it was a very pleasant surprise even if he did park his butt pretty much in my face. He got his belly rubbed and his butt scratched and he eventually turned a 180 and got his ears scratched and I got full tilt boogie morning breath in my face. He stayed up there about 15 minutes and it really did help me ease into Monday. But the rest of the morning, instead of lying in the bedroom the way he normally does, he followed me from room to room and seemed a little nervous. I was leaning over the tub washing my hair and here he comes under my left arm — my very own shampoo boy. He’s never done that before.
I hung out a few minutes longer than I normally do and he seemed to settle down. I didn’t hear any thunder and it didn’t appear to be raining anywhere nearby, so I don’t know what the bee in his bonnet was. When I came home from work, he was fine, but my computer keyboard was nearly off its tray and the mouse was on the floor. He obviously had gotten under my desk and stepped on the cords — he will go under the desk when he’s afraid. The bathtub has also been a place of refuge for him and sure enough, he had been in there and knocked over the shampoo and conditioner bottles.
I have no idea what spooked him. Maybe we had a small earthquake. It’s not as far fetched an idea as you might think. I checked with the U.S. Geological Survey and there had been a minor 2.6 magnitude earthquake in eastern Tennessee late Sunday night so maybe there something going on here in central NC that only animals could sense. Shoot, I didn’t feel a thing when we had that 5.8 earthquake last August. I was outside at work and didn’t know anything about it until I went back into the building. Whatever it was, it was over by the time I came home from work on Monday. On the plus side, he got on the bed again on Friday morning to remind me that it was time for his breakfast. That tells me his knee is feeling better. He’s even started getting on his orthopedic bed more often and takes an occasional snooze on it, but he still seems to prefer the floor and that’s just fine.
A dog is not “almost human” and I know of no greater insult to the canine race than to describe it as such. ~John Holmes
Glad Dudley’s knee is doing better! I have so many friends with dogs that hate thunder and I consider myself quite lucky that Lillie doesn’t even bat an eye when the storms roll in.
Zoe was never fazed by storms and snored through most of them. Dudley has always been afraid of them, you should have seen him about 3:45 a.m. this morning when the thunderstorm rolled through, he was a wreck!
Glad Dudley’s knee is doing better. I know all about belly rubs and butt scratches! I have a rottweiler named Zeus and a mutt named Lucky who love them! I Dogs bring so much joy to our lives and I would do anything for my two boys!
Infact, I am looking for dog lovers to check out my new bloggThat I have started for my six year old rottie Zeus who has a rare genetic disorder (an allergic reaction to antibiotics has caused his immune system to start attacking his joints causing him severe pain and making it difficult for him to walk). I love him so much and cannot imagine life without him. He needs extensive test and treatment and we are trying to raise enough money to save him. He is the most adorable, loving, and gentle giant in the world! I love him with all of my heart and it saddens me to see him struggling so much! I only hope we can raise enough money to save my beautiful boy! Please help by visiting our blogg page and passing the word along.
